The Grammy-winning artist and social activist met her wife over the phone in 2009, when Shepherd was working for Beatles singer Paul McCartney's charity. The pair met in person in 2010 and tied the knot two years later — with three separate wedding ceremonies. After being introduced to the music of Elton John, Carlile taught herself to play piano, and at 17, she learned to play the guitar. Carlile's music through the years has been categorized in several genres, including pop, rock, alternative country, and folk.

Carlile was born on June 1, 1981, in Ravensdale, Washington, a small town 30 miles outside Seattle. Growing up in the only house for miles, Carlile played in the woods, built forts, and played music with her brother, Jay, and sister, Tiffany. When she was four, Carlile contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life.

The three of them have matching tattoos of the Auryn amulet, the double ouroboros that are the central magical item in the book and movie The Neverending Story. On October 23, 2021, Carlile was the musical guest on NBC's Saturday Night Live. Carlile later reflected on the Recording Academy's decision to nominate "Right on Time" in the pop category rather than the American Roots category during an interview with Billboard. While she noted how grateful she was for the Grammys and everything it has done for her career, she said the decision "pissed her off." The couple used IVF treatments to get pregnant, harvesting Carlile's eggs for Shepherd to carry. Carlile later revealed to PEOPLE that she initially struggled with not being the one to carry Evangeline, but she eventually came to terms with her role.

Her memoir, 'Broken Horses,' is about her early life and the family of misfits she's built. "I think I'm starting to really feel sort of solid and loved in my world. Like maybe I've kind of finally found my place," Carlile says. One of the themes of the documentary is the double standard Tucker faced as a woman in country music.
